By any standards it was an ambitious question. 'Dad,' I said plaintively, 'I know I'm only 22 and everything but do you think there's any chance that I could borrow the boat in the south of France for a couple of weeks this summer.'
Of course the answer would be 'no'. This was not like asking to borrow a fiver, or the car. This was a six-berth gin palace with two turbocharged Volvo engines. And I had the responsibility and maturity of a praying mantis. 'Yes,' he said. 'Sure.'
