Star chef rejects Michelin star

The loss of a star in the Michelin used to be a gastronomic catastrophe, equivalent to having one's medals taken away after an Olympic race.

Two years ago a three-star French chef even committed suicide, depressed by, amongst other things, rumours that he might lose a Michelin star.

Now, Go Provence, is reporting that René Jugy-Bergès of the Sainte-Victoire restaurant in the village of Beaurecueil has decided to give back his Michelin star.

'I cannot take it any more,' he said last week. 'That is why I have decided to give back my star. A Michelin star is the apotheosis for any cook, but it also brings a lot of stress and anguish that hurts the family. I do not want any more stars', René Jugy-Bergès said.
