Corsica discovery - Statue of a Roman emperor

Source: www.rivieratimes.com. Posted on 19 January 2006.

The exquisite statue of a child discovered in the wreck of the Roman Purtichju ship (3rd century) in July 2005, near Ajaccio off Corsica now has an identity. The marble effigy represents Roman Emperor Philippe I's son, Philippe II.

Significant pieces found on the site appear to represent Philippe I - often referred to as 'the Arabic' - and his wife Marcia Otacilia Severa, who reigned in the Mediterranean world two centuries after Jesus-Christ. It is these which confirm the identity of the child statue.
