Croissants and croisettes

The French have a reputation for being argumentative, so it's hardly surprising if they can't decide where exactly the Côte d'Azur is. The eastern end is beyond dispute - it's the Italian border. But how far west does it stretch? On the autoroute near Cannes, there's a sign saying just 'Côte d'Azur', apparently a laconic way of telling you you're entering it.
According to my Petit Larousse dictionary, however, the coast is also azure way over in Marseilles, and I prefer this version of geography. Because some of my favorite spots on the French Med lie a long way west of that laconic road sign - miraculously unspoilt havens that feel like the Amazon rain forest compared to the concrete jungles of Nice and Monaco.
