Pierrefeu du Var

Source: www.campingclairdelune.fr. Posted on 14 February 2005.

Pierrefeu-du-Var sits on a hill, to the north of the Maures, dominating the flat lands of vineyards spread across the lands below. The old village is on the flanks of the hillside, with chapel Ste-Croix and an excellent view, on a rocky peak just above, and the expanded village of newer housing mostly on the southern base of the hill.

The village isn't spectacular, but it's nice and it's natural without being overly 'prettified' for the tourists. The trompe-l'oeil mural in the center of the village is really grand. The old village has a 'Sarrasin' quarter, narrow old streets and an occasional vaulted passage. The Saint Jacques church was restored at the end of the 18th century, and is topped with a square bell tower and campanile.
