Racing in the streets of Avignon

The German-based DTM touring car racing series has added Avignon to its 2005 calendar with a September 18 race date in Avignon. Local Formula 1 racing hero Jean Alesi - now a driver for the Mercedes DTM team - negotiated with the Avignon authorities to stage the race on a street course that will see the hot sedans racing past the famous Pont d'Avignon. Alesi's Mercedes teammates this year include flying Finn Mika Häkinnen and Canadian Bruno Spengler.
