France privatizes castles and monuments

Source: www.dw-world.de. Posted on 04 March 2005.

France is planning to privatize 178 historical castles and monuments throughout its republic. Authorities fear that they may not be able to afford their time consuming and financially straining maintenance.

In the course of its decentralization policy, France aims to pass parts of its national cultural heritage to the administrative sovereignty of provinces and local authorities, for free.

The Association of French Provinces has, however, complained that the law allowing the transfer was passed without the approval of the affected bodies, which fear high maintenance and restoration costs.

Some politicians even went as far as calling it a 'poisoned gift'.
