CPE law scrapped, strikes continuing

Source: www.rivieratimes.com. Posted on 11 April 2006.

More industrial disruption will continue today regardless of the withdrawal of the controversial CPE law.

Prime Minister de Villepin addressed the nation late yesterday afternoon following two months of general strikes against the employment law. Student Union leaders had given the government until Easter to retract the law, or face further crippling nationwide strikes. Mr de Villepin agreed that he had misjudged the country's concerns over the law.

The plan to replace the CPE was formed following government talks with President Chirac yesterday and is expected to be voted on within the next few days. Some schools and universities are choosing to remain closed until the end of the week.
