Hermann's tortoises in the Var

Source: www.campingclairdelune.fr. Posted on 03 March 2005.

The only indigenous tortoises in France are to be found in the Var and on Corsica. During your stay at Résidence Les Marronniers, you may actually see one, if you spend some time in the thickly forested areas on top of the hills by the residence.

Up to the middle of the eighties, they were also present in the French Albères but a serious forest fire destroyed them all.

The species is protected by national and international laws. It is, therefore strictly forbidden to pick them up in the wild, to sell them (including their shells, eggs, scales, bones etc.) or to stuff them.

These laws protect the other French species of turtles (Emys and Mauremys) as well as for some exotic species.
