Is the Mediterranean a flood risk?

With the severe flooding in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta yesterday and more heavy rain today we are reminded of the tsunami in the Asian region two years ago, which killed so many.
The Mediterranean Sea is right on the doorstep of so many of the top towns, including Marseilles, Nice, Cannes and Monaco along the Riviera, which would be at risk if such severe flooding occurred here. So what is the risk of a tsunami in this region? The reality is that we are in an active volcanic region. However historical records show that not many natural disasters have occurred, with 30 to 40 significant tsunamis occurring each century over the last 500 years.
