The British are leading the way when it comes to foreigners buying property in France. The purchase of French property by foreigners increased by 3 per cent in 2002, and the British represent a large part of this rise, making up 40 per cent of all foreign purchasers. The British now own 3 per cent of all the rural space in France, including not just houses, but also farms, vineyards and forests.

No region of France now escapes the effects of the greater mobility of foreign nationals, says the survey. 'Of all the countries in the community of Europe, France is the most attractive, particularly to the retired,' said Cyril Nourissat of the university of Bourgogne. 'I often say that France will become the California of Europe.'
