Every year, May 16-17-18, the people of Saint-Tropez celebrate the Bravades, a ritual which expresses their deep attachment to their military history and above all to their Patron Saint.

In 1554, after completion of the fortifications of the town, it was decided to rebuild the Saint-Tropez Chapel. According to tradition, Saint-Tropez had been buried at this spot. Every year on the 17th of May the entire population formed a procession to commemorate the anniversary of the running aground of the boat carrying the martyr's body in 68 A.D. The chapel being situated extra-muros, the inhabitants went there fully armed.
