First forest fire in the Var this year

The first forest fire of the year began yesterday at around 5pm in the Commune de Sanary in the Grand Vallet region.
The fire spread across 20 hectares of pine forest in only a few hours as a result of strong winds.A total of 80 firefighters plus two Canadairs, two trackers and two Bell helicopters were scrambled to extinguish the flames.
The wind began to die down in the early evening and by 8.30pm the fire was under control. Two police officers and four firemen were wounded due to smoke inhalation and two emergency vehicles were damaged. Fortunately no homes or buildings were affected. An inquest will be opened into the cause of the fire.
