Firemen on strike in the Var

Starting from yesterday (Thurs 25th) fire stations around the region are not functioning as usual. Instead, firemen are coming to work out of uniform, and many protests are being staged.

The strike is in response to a dispute over the budget. From 2005 money was to be allocated to pay for overtime of firemen on call. However, this package has been postponed until 2007.

The trade unions claim this is unsatisfactory, especially since the budget for the Alpes-Maritime is larger, despite a smaller number of personnel.
