Red Flamingo (Phoenicopterus ruber roseus)

Source: www.campingclairdelune.fr. Posted on 20 March 2005.

With their bright feathers and strongly hooked bills, flamingos are among the most easily recognized waterbirds. Their pink or reddish color comes from the rich sources of carotenoid pigments (like the pigments of carrots) in the algae and small crustaceans that the birds eat.

The Red Flamingo is the official symbol of Salins d'Hyères. They can be found in the wild on the Presqu'île de Giens near Résidence Les Marronniers.
